6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

This was a mystery, mustérion in Greek, a truth revealed at the time God chose to reveal it. A truth that was not known prior to the revelation of God to his people. This revelation came through the Apostle Paul. He was set apart as an Apostle to the Gentile. In human understanding this seems like an illogical choice.
