Synopsis

So we are to avoid those who teach things contrary to sound doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ. Instead, we are to rely on the Holy Spirit, who lives in us, to reveal truth to our innermost being, so we can walk in the newness of life. For it is for freedom that Christ set us free. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Does your heart yearn to know the truth? Consider the parables of the lost coin, the lost sheep, and the prodigal son. What do these stories tell us about the heart of God, His love and acceptance of us, His compassion and understanding of us in our weak and dead condition. He seeks out the sinner that he might restore him back to Himself. Such is the love of God. Indeed, we love because He first loved us. He initiated His love to us first, and we respond to that love.

What does God look at? Does He not look at the attitudes of the heart? Are you humble and teachable, open to listening to the living and active word of God, and allow that word to renew your mind with truth? Is there a dependence on the Holy Spirit, for Him to live His life in and through you? Or, are you leaning on your own understanding, having not known God or His ways? What is the motive of your heart? Men cannot weigh motives, but God can see right through any one of us. Do we do things to get accolades from men, to get money and power and fame? Do we do things to make a name for ourselves? Or do we do things, as Jesus did, to bring honor to the one who sent us? Classic Christianity – A Closer Look at The Word of God P18 (03-17-21)

Synopsis

As was prophesied through the prophet Jeremiah, and explained more thoroughly in the book of Hebrews, we live today under a new covenant. Jeremiah and Jesus both lived under an old covenant. While Jesus was on this earth, He lived under an old covenant while speaking about a new covenant to come. He initiated a new covenant, or new will, after His death on a cross. Just as we have a will today that only goes into effect after the person living dies, so too with this new covenant Jesus spoke about, that also the writer of Hebrews explains.

The old covenant was one of law, like a tutor to those under the law until Christ should come to fulfill the law. No man could fulfill all the just requirements of the law. This law required perfection and if anyone failed at just one point, he was guilty of breaking all of it. The reason for that is because anything that does not come from faith is sin, and the wages of sin is death. Faith in Jesus is What Counts

Classic Christianity – A Closer Look at The Word of God P16 (03-15-21)

Synopsis

As you read through chapter eleven in the book of Hebrews, you will read about several Old Testament people and events that happened during their lifetime. We read about these men of faith, some that conquered kingdoms and others that were conquered for the cause of Christ, some were strong and did great exploits whereas others were sawed in two or wandered around in holes in the ground. But all of them were commended for their faith.

So you ask yourself, why would the writer of Hebrews think it important to write about these people and events? Certainly he believed they were real people and real events. Then you also have the apostles Peter and Paul also writing and referencing people and events, and sometimes the same people and the same events. Did they think they were real people and real events? What about their enemies? Did they think they were real people and real events? As you ponder over these things, you must conclude they were real people and real, and not fairy tales.

Synopsis

It is so easy to assume someone is a believer. They go to church. They talk the talk. They pray. They sure act like one. They are even nice-sounding people. But the truth of the matter is the only person who really knows is the individual himself and God. But we can do ourselves or someone else a disservice by not asking probing questions about what truth is. We could also just assume they think just like us, and know what we know. But what if we also do not know the truth. Do we really simply want people to know what we know?

We may know Jesus is God, that he died, was buried and rose again and we even know about the Trinity, and believe that to be true. But does that necessarily mean that we know God? Does that mean we understand what it means to be born again? I may have even heard the phrase born again, but it might have a totally different connotation of meaning to me than what God really intended me to understand and know.
