Synopsis

Do you have a plumbline to gauge whether something is true? The word of God is the plumbline for truth, to gauge our lives so that we are not ensnared and trapped in error in our thinking but can submit to God and resist the lie and live in truth. The battle in the world today, as in Jesus day, and since the beginning of time, has been the battle for the mind. That is where temptation starts.

Temptation is getting you to doubt what God has said, to doubt that God has the best in mind for you, and to believe that someone other than God has the answers to life, that someone else can give you what you need rather than God, or that you can meet your own needs and live independently of God, or even that He is not God. Satan has so deceived mankind that we have become slaves to the god of this world, who is Satan, where we experience so much heartache and pain.

One of the most common questions is in regard to overcoming depression. First of all, depression is not unusual. It is so common to all men. God knows our tendencies, our weaknesses, and how our mind works. He is our creator after all. So why not go to Him for truth on such matters?

So first realize that our emotions respond predictably to what we put in our minds. If you see a scary movie, that scene you saw, your mind does not know the difference between reality and fantasy. Oftentimes people grow up with religion and reject the reality of Christ Jesus. They associate Christ with things spoken in context of preachers speaking things that are simply not true. Instead of checking out what is being said as being true or not, we see no reality in it, so we reject the religion, but sadly we also reject Christ, whom we associate with in our minds. But one day, we see the reality of a changed life in someone else, who has the Spirit of God living in him. So we ask, what is it in him that is different? What kind of life does he have that I do not? Then you hear the practical wisdom he shares from God’s word. Your heart is moved. You see the practical wisdom and how people are able to walk in joy and peace. People have come to Christ that way. Christ in you was a light that shined in a dark world, but truth was made known concerning Christ, of the gospel that saves, and he believed and put His faith in Christ.

When you think of all the prophecies that were said regarding Christ Jesus, as spoken by the prophets, and that all was fulfilled that was written concerning Him in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms, and then, if you were one of His disciples on earth, you hear what Jesus said in regard to His soon resurrection, what do you suppose your response would be? Jesus said to them, “I will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock me, insult me and spit on me; I will be flogged and then killed. On the third day, I will rise again.”

Like all of us, we hear, but do not understand, and fail to believe. Why is it that we are so slow and hard of heart to believe all that Jesus has done and said? Can you not believe based on the miracles themselves? And the greatest miracles of all is the resurrection. Historians and archaeologists and various researchers have studied the resurrection and the empty tomb. There is no doubt the resurrection occurred. There is so much error that needs to be replaced with truth. You are inundated with teaching from denominational persuasions of men, that if you are not in God’s word, relying on the Spirit to reveal truth to you, you have this tendency to hold onto things you think are true. You have heard something so often and so repetitively from people who have this reputation of being a leader or having some seminary degree that you believe what they say. They could be teaching truth, but they could also be teaching error. How do you know? So we are to be those who diligently study the scriptures to see if what someone says is true.

Many people think the ten commandments are a guide for a believer. But if you look into scripture, you come to realize that the law was made for the unbeliever, that they come to the end of the law for righteousness, that they might seek a Savior. It is so important to speak truth in love, for that is how people are set free, with truth. So what hinders us from speaking truth? Is it not fear? And if we fear, where is our attention mostly on? Is it not on ourselves, in what we perceive we might lose or be hurt by others who may not think the same way we do, of the persecution we might receive by not telling the truth? What do you think happened in Nazi Germany, when people were afraid to speak out in truth? There is a time in which when people fail to live in accordance with what is true that freedom is taken away more and more, until before long the consequences are so severe, it is nearly impossible to ever gain your freedom back. What would happen to the black man in the days of slavery if courageous men did not speak the truth and had what were truly peaceful protests back then, unlike what people falsely claim as peaceful protests today, with buildings on fire in the background, yet calling it peaceful.
