Faith in Jesus Must be the Object of Faith

Synopsis

In this study on Faith, Hope and Love, we have looked into what faith is, what faith is not, and that there is misplaced faith, and then there is faith placed properly on what is true, and on the one who is the way, the truth and the life. This faith in Christ Jesus, who is God in the flesh, is the faith we are talking about. Now this truth is what men cannot grasp on their own. This truth must be revealed by the Spirit of God to the hearts of men.

Now, many times, people relegate faith to just this aspect of getting saved, but then so many people do not really understand what saved means. If you grew up never hearing the word “saved” then you might respond by saying, “What are you talking about? It is so easy to forget. Paul reminds us again and again to be joyful always. How can we be joyful? First of all, do you have the Spirit of the living God living in you? Yes, you say. Then you are given the privilege of participating in the divine nature, the nature to be joyful. Why? What trust did you have for Christ to do for you? What was the biggest thing God did for you? He died for your sins, and indeed the sins of the entire world. Before you were even born, he demonstrated his love for mankind. He also had you in mind, in that while you were yet his enemy, a sinner, he died for you. He died so that the punishment of death required for sin was paid in full. Synopsis

Bob continues sharing from the book of Romans. Follow along in the 3^rd chapter of Romans. Paul explains this righteousness that is by faith after first explaining man’s condition of spiritual death. Both the Jew and the Gentile are reduced to the same level, spiritually dead and in need of life. The Jew under the law has been buried by the law, condemned by the law. The Gentile, not having the law, is condemned by his own conscience, which testifies against him. In both cases, whether under the law or apart from the law, they are both sinners, dead in their trespasses and sins. Indeed, no one, not a man born today, will be declared righteous by observing the law for it is through the law you are conscious of sin.

Paul explains righteousness, contrasting what man thinks is righteousness with God’s righteousness. Am I a righteous person because of what I am doing? Think about that? We are so prone to follow for what He can give us. They followed him when he fed the five thousand. Why? The next day Jesus said to them, “The only reason you are following me is because you were fed on the other side of the lake”.

I have seen this again and again so many times in people today. In church work, working down on the streets, a guy says, “Give me a meal. What do I need to do? Get baptized. Lead me to the water”. So he gets baptized to get a meal and not to get Jesus. Thousands of times people take advantage of that to get numbers to their credit. The only reason they went to the water was to get a meal and not to get Jesus. You have to have discernment on that kind of thing to determine if they are sincere or just following you to get a meal. That is one of the dangers of just giving a meal. All you have accomplished is satisfying someone’s hunger for a couple of hours. You have not accomplished anything.

Bob continues sharing from John 4 and John 5. In John 4, we read about Jesus healing a Father’s son. His father came to Jesus begging him to heal his son, having heard all that Jesus did, knowing of his healing power. In John 5, we read about a man who was disabled for 38 years, in a state of self pity, and was asked by Jesus if he wanted to get well.

Bob explains the more important reason Jesus came. He came to heal the person, spiritual healing, as of utmost importance. Even in today’s world, so many people are infatuated with signs and wonders and healing. Do you want to get well or would you rather remain in your condition? Do you come to Jesus for signs and wonders or do you come to Jesus by faith in what he accomplished for you at the cross?
