Synopsis

Turn to Romans and read along as Bob explains its meaning. The book of Romans is a book of contrast between law and grace. The purpose of the law is for man to recognize his sinfulness, his condition of spiritual death, that he might seek a Savior in Jesus Christ. There is so much that the apostle Paul explains concerning the law; its purpose, it’s inability to make one righteous before God, it’s ministry of death to make man realize his sinful state. The law is like a mirror. A mirror can show dirt on the face but it has no power to remove the dirt. So too is the law to show man he is a sinner but there is no power in the law to make anyone righteous before God.

The law demands perfect obedience, which no man in his weakened sinful state could ever completely obey. As James said, if a man obeyed all of the law but failed at just one point, then he is guilty of breaking all of the law. A law without a penalty is no law at all. The law would have no meaning. The topics that often come up among believers is what about repenting of your sins. Many people think sharing the gospel requires people to repent of all their sins. Other people think that the law is a support for a believer, like a guide to live by. We hear a lot of things in this world, but all those things we hear have to be tested with the word of God and through the Spirit of God, to test the truth of what is being said.

The truth of the matter is, none of us are born a Christian. We were all born lost, without the spirit of God living in us. We had to be born again. When we were lost, we were, by default under the law of sin and death. We had to be released from that law and set free in Christ. Under law, there is a punishment, otherwise the meaningless.

At times, people have called in, asking for help with a drug problem, whether alcohol, marijuana or something else. But in reality their problem is not really a drug problem, but a heart problem. For as Jesus said it out of the heart that comes the issues of life. The way to fix a heart problem, is to address the source of the problem. What error have you believed concerning yourself or God? Do you think you are condemned to hell because of your addiction? If you are a child of God, you are not. If you are not a child of God, then that is your source of your problem, not knowing God, and therefore, not having access to truth, the mind of Christ, to set you free.

But either way, there is error in your thinking that binds you. You are either under the control of Satan, which you are by default as a lost person, or you have put yourself under his control by yielding to the temptation of the flesh, which is where sin dwells. When you think of church, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Do you think of activities, a church building on the corner of walk and don’t walk?
