Synopsis

So when you become born again, what is your identity? Are you a Baptist, a Presbyterian, or whatever title you choose to associate with? No. The bible only gives you one identity, a child of God. Denominations teach you denominational persuasions of men. It might be true. It might not be true. How do you know that what people are teaching you is true? By the word of God you hold in your hands, and by the Spirit of God, living in you, who has promised to guide you into all truth. Do you test whatever any man says is true? Do you test what is being said by looking into God’s word, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to you? That is what the apostle Paul commended the Bereans for doing. We also have the exhortation to study the word so at to rightly divide the word of God. We are instructed to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

As we live in our present bodies, in this sin-indwelling flesh, none of us are beyond falling into old sinful patterns. Yes, we, who are in Christ, live under the grace of God, but we never want to take advantage of God’s grace and live in sin for which Christ has set us free. So Paul addresses the church in Corinth, for the third time now, and is grieved and humbled to go over these same matters again. He provides firm correction, as we read in 1 Corinthians, about a man who has his father’s wife. The Corinthian church was boasting and should be grieved. The church listened to Paul’s instruction, and the man was put out of fellowship with the church, to be handed over to Satan so his flesh will be destroyed. Rainey: I am reading Classic Christianity, and calling the number at the end of the book. I am dealing with depression. I have had a very difficult childhood, with divorce. I thought I got over most of the stuff. I was always religious, a Catholic growing up, and thought I would become a nun. I think anti-depressants help. I get messages that I do not have enough faith.

Bob: Let me see if I can help you. If you have depression, I can help you with that. Psychiatric patients are like that because they are obsessed with the past or the future. The first thing you have to understand is that God created you that our feelings will predictably respond to what you are thinking. As an example, “Have you ever felt the emotion of jealousy? The gospel of good news in Christ Jesus is a practical message that changes lives. The truth of Christ lives in you and truly sets you free. The root cause of marriage is people trying to get a need met from the spouse for love and acceptance. Those are things only God can give you. So when a spouse expects this to be met by her mate then that drains him of energy and puts a strain and burden on the marriage. Such was the case with Katie who called. She called with great emotional pain, having been married for two years but currently separated from her husband for three months now. Classic Christianity – Book of John Part 45 (07-15-19)

We have to understand God wants us to grow in the depth of the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, to get to know him deeper and deeper and deeper, to know the height, width, depth and breadth of the love of God and to know this love that surpasses knowledge so you and I can experience the fullness of God in our lives and be controlled by his Spirit.
