Depression is one of the most common struggles people face. All of us face depression from time to time, and sometimes it grabs a hold of you and essentially cripples you from living free as God intended, full of joy and a peace that surpasses understanding. When you recognize that it is primarily a thinking problem rather than a disease or sickness, then you are on the starting point of walking free. You can start replacing the error in your thinking with truth.

With depression, we often are triggered by an emotional pain, an insult or a rejection from someone. Then you dwell on those thoughts in your head, but instead of relying on truth, you rely on feelings. Then instead of going to God for the answer in His word, you resort to other substitutes that make the flesh feel good. Oftentimes those things we gravitate to are only temporary and fleeting and are not real solutions, but often make the problem worse and fuel our depression. As we grow in Christ, we all have our struggles, our battles with temptations of the flesh. That can be unique to each individual, what seems to be more prone to you, your weakness. Sometimes we give into our flesh, but we must remind ourselves that we do not have to. We are instructed to rejoice in our weakness so that the power of Christ might rest on us. That is what walking by faith is, walking in what God says is true about you and His provision of life or you. If you are a child of God, then you are being internally led by the Spirit of God, who lives in you. As a child of God, He has given you everything you need for life and godliness through Him who lives in you.

Knowing God and His word, the meaning of the word as revealed by the Spirit of God, is really useful for practical living.Sometimes you wonder what happens in religious denominations, if they even know God or His word. You have people who just do not think, believing the King James only bible, and those who are into legalism. It sure makes you wonder if they even have the Spirit, because if you have the Spirit living in you, you would think you would be led by the Spirit. You cannot be led by the spirit and be led by the law at the same time.

So often in today’s religious world, people are burdened under legalism. They may or may not have understood the gospel of God’s grace. They might possibly heard only a half gospel, incorrectly thinking that they must ask for forgiveness or even keep asking for God’s forgiveness but have not heard about coming to Christ for life. Sadly, many churches will teach people to keep short accounts with God. Even if a person is born again, they got under legalistic teaching, and you got under teaching, that if you keep on sinning, God is going to turn His back on you. Many people think they have backslidden when that is truly not the case. The word backslidden is not even in the scriptures.

We are now starting Romans 2. Bob recaps what he talked about last week, that he is not ashamed of the gospel, and neither should we, who are in Christ Jesus. Paul proclaims this gospel in Christ Jesus to the Roman empire with all its pomp and prestige, with its great army and as the leader of the known world. He addressed the sin of homosexuality, and pointed out that unlike other sin, people are taunting it. The root attitude of all sin is the attitude of “I do not need God” and “I will do it my way”. When a society of people decide for themselves right from wrong, with a government that forms such attitudes, they silence and eventually persecute the church, the people of God.
