Emotions Respond to Whatever We Are Thinking

Justin called from Vancouver, British Columbia. He wanted some practical biblical advice from scripture for someone that is facing emotional pain.

Bob tells him that our emotions follow what we are thinking. We don’t have emotional problems, we have thinking problems. It’s like when you go to the movie and see a scary movie, that scares the living daylights out of you.

The same thing occurs to the person that is dwelling on sins from the past or the things from our past that were not good. Then, if that isn’t enough for us to worry about, we start thinking about all the bad things that may happen in the future. You start thinking about all the hardships you are going to face or thinking you may have to go selling pencils on a street-corner someplace for a job.

Jesus told us to live one day at a time, and the Apostle Paul wrote, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

As a new believer, you will tend to have more of a struggle in overcoming sinful habits, and that is not unusual, as you are just now on the starting line of having your mind renewed. Even as you mature in Christ, you will continue in that process of having your mind renewed until the day you meet the Lord. We will all continue to battle the flesh, and God knows our weaknesses and tendencies. We are all reminded to guard our life and doctrine closely and take heed that we do not fall, and to be gentle and humble toward others, as we ourselves could easily get caught up in any sin ourselves. By allowing God to change us, our thinking and attitudes of heart, our actions will be in accordance with who we are as a child of God, and our emotions will follow. Justin called on behalf of a friend to help him out, for he was is struggling with emotional and spiritual pain. Bob replied by explaining how God designed the mind, will and emotions. Emotions are dumb and only respond to what the mind feeds, whether real or fantasy, and it cannot discern the difference. The key to overcoming emotional pain is to renew the mind. For as the mind is renewed the feelings follow. To have proper feelings then your mind needs to dwell on things that are true. The word of God is true. But in order to understand truth one must be born again of the Spirit. When you are born again and taught of the Spirit you will learn to walk in complete joy and freedom.

Classic Christianity – Book of John p4 (10-17-18)

Bob George, continues his teaching from God’s word from the book of John. He has a passion to share insight from God’s word to help the listener walk in true freedom. Beginning with this very passage, Bob elaborates on foundation principles for walking in freedom. How do you overcome fear, depression and anxiety? These are problems common to all men, and Jesus alone knows how we are made and has the solution. Then, after a short break, he speaks on a subject titled “Prepared or Scared”. He exhorts believers to be prepared for tribulation to come and the importance of spiritual training, contrasting the training offered in the natural realm, such as universities or the corporate world, with an appeal to believers to show yourself as an approved workman, rightly dividing the word of truth.
