What was Wrong With the Old Covenant?

Since we have a New Covenant that replaced the Old Covenant, what was wrong with the Old Covenant? We read that the law was holy, righteous and good (Romans 7:12), so the problem was not really with the law, or the Old Covenant. The problem is with us, the people. No one can keep the law. As Paul recognized in his own life and described for us in Romans 7, that the things I want to do I do not do and the things I hate to do I do anyways. He once thought he could obey the law and described his life as far as legalistic righteousness is concerned, faultless (Philippians 3:4-6). At one time Paul thought he could keep the law, that in his mind, the law was intended to bring life. He discovered that when the law said, “Do not covet”, instead of not coveting, he coveted all the more.

Have you understood what faith is? Faith must have an object. It is more than an intellectual assent to facts or some sort of faith in some mystery, that nobody knows what that mystery is. I can know that Abraham Lincoln died in Ford’s theater and by believing that, that does not have any impact on my life. I can even go to church, thinking that if I go to church then somehow God will accept me, or my good deeds will outweigh my bad. I can think that I can get all my sins confessed that built up during the week off my chest. I could be doing that whether I was going to a Catholic mass or even sitting in my own bedroom quoting 1 John 1:9, but all the while wondering if I missed confessing some sin. I could even think that I came to Jesus to get all my sins forgiven, and then still doing those confessing of sins as well. It seems the message of the gospel, of proclaiming truth in Christ Jesus, has to be continually told because there are always new people born into this world, dead spiritually, and who are being raised by the same training centers that never get set aside or never stop speaking error, for they hold onto error, for they have never heard the truth themselves, or stopped to test all things with the word of God. Seminaries continue to put out the same teaching year after year.

And if that is not bad enough, more error gets added, more infiltrators get into those teaching centers called the modern church, and instead of teaching truth, they teach error, law mixed with grace at best. But whether it is speaking in tongues or tithes for today, error continues on. Then new errors get added it seems, if not spiritual formation, then critical race theory, or something else. A very common misunderstanding is the concept of confession and repentance of sin. A lot of erroneous thinking comes from denominational influences. Many of us grew up in a Catholic or a Protestant type of church, so you probably have heard people say you need to confess your sins to a priest or to God. But very few people have really checked into the word of God to see if what is being said is true or not. Take a look at what Jesus said prior to His ascension back to heaven while he walked on this earth for some forty days. He said He came to prove the world wrong about what they think sin is, of what people think they need to repent of.

Synopsis

Common questions people ask from time to time are what is redemption, atonement, propitiation and trinity. If you have grown up with any sort of religious background, or have opened up your bible to read it, you have probably heard or read these words before. Words have meaning, but they must be used in their context in which they are written. Keep in mind also that translations are not always accurate, so if something is unclear, check it out in a Hebrew or Greek concordance. There is an interlinear bible online that can be helpful on that.

But, first of all, rely on the Holy Spirit to teach you truth. The biblical meaning is what is important, even if a dictionary seems to indicate a contrary meaning. There is enough cross-referencing of scripture, with the Holy Spirit living in you, to reveal to you God’s intended meaning. We all struggle in growing in Christ, learning how to overcome worry and all kinds of sin, and how to make wise decisions in those difficult things of life. Much of our struggle is because we are leaning on our understanding, trying to work things out in the energy of our flesh, or are focusing, not on Christ, but our circumstances and surroundings, and letting the voice of the world crowd out truth.
